The Griddle

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

The Griddle is a beautifully designed puzzle site by David Millar. It will especially appeal to more advanced solvers who are bored with the same-old same-old. You’ll find a new puzzle variety, in PDF format, nearly every day, including some interesting variants on Sudoku, Kakuro and Slitherlink. Check it out!

Two Crossfigure Puzzles

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

I received some interesting hand-made Crossfigure puzzles from Israeli puzzle constructor Yochanan. He says he learned the technique of making these puzzles when he was “still a fairly young man, about seventy or so,” from L.G. Horsefield. These numeric crosswords are similar to Kakuro and KenKen puzzles, but have greater variety in the clues. Here’s […]

Wired Mysteries

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

A few friends recommended I check out the May issue of Wired, so I finally picked up a copy at the airport today. They were right — this is the best issue of Wired I’ve seen in a few years! Wired is one of many magazines that has been noticeably suffering from the downturn in […]

Variety Slitherlinks

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

I’ve added a new collection of Slitherlink puzzles to the site, which feature six-different tile layouts. Enjoy!

Quirk – a Bendable Pencil

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Denise Bagley from ComfortStylus.com recently sent me a sample of their Quirk Bendable Pencil, thinking it would be of interest to the puzzle solvers who visit this website. I generally solve puzzles with a pen. However my wife, Janet, used it for a few weeks, and submitted the following review: Comfortstylus is a fancy name […]

Killer Sudokus at KrazyDad

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

A few readers have written to me in the last few months, requesting Killer Sudoku puzzles, so I’ve been feverishly working weekends to get some ready for the website. They are just about ready to go, and I’m ready to pass out samples. Killer Sudokus are an interesting hybrid between the Sudoku and Kakuro puzzles […]

Earthquake knocks ink off puzzles. Ink manufacturers sad.

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

There was a 5.4 earthquake here in southern California today, and it had a curious effect: All the heavy black areas were knocked off of my Kakuro puzzles. While they are slightly less attractive, I’m told they use up considerably less ink and toner this way, so I guess I’ll keep ’em. I hope you […]

Puzzle Building and the Creative Mind

Monday, February 4th, 2008

If you’re interested in the puzzles on this website, and would like to learn more about what goes into making them, you may enjoy the article I wrote for this month’s Mung Being magazine, where I am the resident puzzle constructor. The article amounts to a FAQ, or IAQ (infrequently asked questions) for the puzzle […]

Penrose Slitherlink Puzzles

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Here are some new puzzles I’m working on. These twelve Slitherlink puzzles use the aperiodic five-fold tiling discovered by Sir Roger Penrose. Not only are the puzzles pretty, but the tiling creates a variety of intersections, which makes the puzzles more interesting. Download ’em here… Thanks to Craig Kaplan for providing the dataset for the […]
